Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a teeth straightening system that uses clear plastic aligners to move your teeth into the best possible position. The aligners are customized trays made of a proprietary material known as SmartTrackⓇ and fit directly over the surface of your teeth.

When you first begin wearing each tray, you can feel the tight fit and the gentle pressure placed on your teeth. Over the course of a few days, that pressure subsides, as your teeth have shifted to conform to the shape of the tray. When you receive your new trays in a week or two, that process begins anew.

What are the advantages of Invisalign over metal braces?

Many people choose Invisalign because of the convenience of care. With metal braces, a great deal of care is required to keep your teeth, along with the brackets and wires, clean and free from plaque or food particles.

With Invisalign, you just remove the aligners and brush and floss your teeth. That means less time spent at the sink, and more opportunities to see your smile transforming as the treatment period goes on.

Invisalign also provides a nearly invisible teeth alignment option. Most people won’t realize that you are wearing your aligners, as you can speak and smile normally while they are in place. When you are ready to sit down for a meal, just remove the aligners until you're finished.

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is an excellent choice for most people who want a straighter smile. The system can address overbite, underbite, crowded or gapped teeth, and even crossbite. If any of these issues are severe, traditional braces may be a better option.

Another thing to consider is your commitment level. Because you can remove the aligners, Invisalign requires a higher degree of commitment than traditional braces. Be sure that you are ready to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours each day.

Age is also a factor. Children and younger teenagers are not good candidates for Invisalign because their teeth have not fully developed.
